Seafoods have fed and nourished humans for many thousands of years. Cultural differences in peoples may determine your seafood preferences as well as the types of seafoods that you may prefer. Certain seaweeds that are edible are also considered as seafoods. Many cultures around the world include these into their diets. Many seafood types are high in protein and considered a staple part of their meals.

There are many different types as listed above, but fish may be one of the more prevalent seafoods for humans due to the many thousands of different fish species around the world. One of the biggest challenges for all cultures is the preservation of the seafood. Due to its delicate and perishable nature, the foods can easily spoil, so must be protected until prepared for human consumption. Depending upon the species of seafood and the geographical location around the globe, different preservation techniques may be used such as freezing, salting, canning and drying. Seafood is eaten and enjoyed around the globe. Just about every culture will consume some type of seafoods during their lifetime.
Seafood is enjoyed many different ways such as fried, stewed, gumbo, chowder, soup, boiled, steamed, raw, sushi and smoked. Many seafoods are high in protein and is the major source of animal proteins for many of the world’s cultures that rely on fish, shellfish and other types of seafoods for their nutrition needs.
